TROOP 21
FLAG PROCEDURE
Pick up and return flags at Backstrom Storage Building, 242 N.E. Thurston. Flag storage is located across the street from Backstrom’s store.
Remember to bring hammer, gloves, pencil, and extra flag holder. If flags are not going to be transported inside a vehicle, wrap flags in clean tarp or blanket.
It is your responsibility to find a replacement if you are unable to do the flag route that you signed up for. Please inform the flag coordinator of your replacement.
The flag coordinator will contact you via e-mail with the route list as an attachment. A hard copy of the route list will also be available at the storage building. Routes will change due to added, dropped or moved businesses as well as relocation of flag holder – always review the route list. When you arrive to pick up the flags, you will need to come in a vehicle that is capable of carrying 20 to 30 ten foot flagpoles. If you are not transporting the flags inside a vehicle, please bring a clean tarp or blanket to wrap them in. Gloves are very helpful when handling the poles. Bring a hammer in case a metal flag holder needs to be reset. You may pick up the flags at your convenience using the lockbox. Be sure to always lock the door and return the key to the lockbox. If the weather is bad, the flags are still put out. They are all-weather flags and meet the rules and etiquette for flags.
The morning of the holiday, you will take the route list, your flags, blocks (if required) and proceed to those locations listed on your route. The scouts should wear their scout uniforms. Do not let them ride in the back of open trucks! The routes usually take between 1 to 1-1/2 hours to complete. The route list is planned so as not to miss any locations and in a logical driving route. The best time to put them out is before 6:00 a.m. when traffic is light. They need to be out by 7:00 a.m. Your route list will have a description of the location and where the flag holder is or where the cement holder is placed. Place in such a way as to not impede foot traffic or the entrance to the business. Downtown flags, placed in cement holders, are lined up near the edge of the curb in a straight line up and down the street.
After you have placed all your flags, checking them off as you go, you are done until late afternoon. Then you will repeat your route, picking up the flags. To decrease wrinkling, it is important to neatly roll up each flag when you take it down. Flags should be picked up after 5:30 p.m. when traffic has slowed down. Please note any problems on the route. If a flag is missing, please note that on your flag route sheet for follow-up by the flag coordinator. Please leave all route sheets in the envelope provided at the storage building. Do not leave on the table.
In participating in the holiday flag route, you have met your obligation to support Troop 21.
