March 2009, Badlands Overnight Camp

Badlands Backpack Saturday, March 7, 2009.  We hiked the Flatiron & Castle Rock trails with an overnight in Castle Rock.  Scout skill highlights included: Leave no trace COLD weather camping, food preparation, cooking, fire building, and water conservation. The area is home to marmots, bobcat, coyotes, mule deer, elk, antelope, rabbits, snakes and lizards. More than 100 species of birds, including prairie falcon and golden eagles who nest in the rimrocks, have been spotted there.

Cascade Mountain View from Castle Rock.  Winds on Saturday afternoon ranged
between 30 - 60 mph!

The Holm boys, Spencer (GC’s) and Desmond (RSB’s) explore the top
of Castle Rock lava butte.

Nice camp location for a couple of the RSB's overlooking the badlands atop
Castle Rock.

Jim Siemens, Lane Powell, and Joseph Schwarz seek a natural Lava Rock shelter
to get out of the wind.

T21's, Cameron Powell, boiling water ensuring RSB's patrol a constant supply

of hot chocolate.

Golden Cobras, John Siemens, having discovered what might be Central
Oregon’s largest collection of Bat Dung, moves in for
a fail safe taste test.
Mike Holm the morning of our departure atop Flatiron Rock was met
with unseasonably large snowflakes, followed by sunshine and Kidney
Bean sized (2 – 4 mm) graupel (hail).  You know what they say…”If
you don’t like the weather now, just wait :20 min!”.

Guided by Scout Master Andy, RSB’s extinguishing their fire,
leaving no trace.

Castle Rock fuels a scout’s imagination with unlimited exploration
opportunities.  This is one lookout where Joseph Schwarz and Jim
Siemens survey fellow scouts below.

Dragon's Lane Powell perched upon Castle Rock enjoying the breeze under
moonlit skies.

The Red-shirted Buffalos that attended probably slept pretty well the night of our return.
