McKenzie River
Whitewater Raft Trip

To wrap up the 1999-2000 planning year, the guys wanted to do all-out fun activity that would keep their interest and keep them busy. Whitewater rafting was the perfect solution. Troop 21 contracted with Sun Country Tours to guide a one day trip down the McKenzie River. We found that using a commercial operator for a one day trip works out very well - as they have the equipment, the safety gear, the transportation, the food, and the experienced guides - all at what turned out to be a very reasonable price per person. The trip was a blast! The McKenzie section we rafted was classified as a "constant gradient", which meant that the water was constantly moving at a good rate, with lots of whitecaps, and punctuated with some great rapids. The group pulled out for lunch, catered with food from Devore's Market (great!) in Bend. After lunch, the crew put in hit the river again. Everyone had great fun, everyone got plenty wet, and all with only one capsize adventure.

The "lead boat" (as in 'let them find the bad rapids first and then go where they don't"') contained (L-R) our trusty guide "T-Bone", Don Leonard ASM, Schuyler Leonard, Tanya Spreier, Ray Spreier SM, Alex Spreier, and Mike Davis.

This boat contained (L-R), our guide, Shirley Saarinen, Dano Saarinen, Nathan Rogers, Adam Dickey, Nic Saarinen, and Erik Harvey.
